Sophia Fahs RE Summer Camp
Dear Sophia Fahs Campers, Families, and Staff:
It’s been quite a year! Our world has changed in so many ways, and so much has been asked of all of us. We know how hard this year was for you all, and we have tried so hard to make sure you still had the traditional Fahs experience to look forward to.
But, as you may already know, last Friday, the New York State Commissioner of Health announced that traditional sleep-away camps would not be allowed to operate in New York this summer.
We are so sorry. We wanted more than anything to be able to have the full Sophia Fahs Camp experience this summer. We know how important it is to you, and we feel the same way. We’ve listened to the graduating Senior Pebbles every year, as they remind the camp how treasured every single day of Fahs is. We treasure it too.
That’s why the Fahs Advisory Council is focusing our efforts on finding ways for the Fahs Family to still come together. We are looking at all options, and leaving no stone unturned. Maybe it will be multiple get-togethers over the summer? Maybe it will be a Fahs day camp? Maybe it will be a family retreat at Camp Echo? Maybe it’ll be something we haven’t imagined yet! But we will find ways to be together this summer, within the limits of circumstances in which we find ourselves, that honor our UU values and our commitment to each other.
To all of our campers: Fahs may not happen physically this summer, but Fahs is more than a place, or an event. It’s inside you, you are a part of it, and it is a part of you. That’s true this summer more than ever. We survived the change of camp location last summer, and we’ll survive the loss of full camp this summer too. And we’ll be back stronger than ever next summer.
To our rising Senior Pebbles: We get it. Whether you started coming to Fahs as a middle schooler or a pre-school child of staff, we remember the child you were, we’ve watched you grow, we’ve celebrated your milestones, and we’ve marveled at the young adults you have become. Our hearts are breaking for you. We desperately wanted to give you the Senior Pebble year that you have earned and you deserve. We promise to work together to create opportunities to celebrate and honor you this summer.
To our new campers: We’re so disappointed we can’t offer you the classic Fahs experience this summer. But nonetheless, we can’t wait to meet you! Whether it will be at this year’s alternative Fahs offerings, or next year at camp, we’re looking forward to welcoming you to the Fahs Family.
Going forward, the Advisory Council will be working on:
In love and fellowship,
Sophia Fahs Camp Advisory Committee
