Sophia Fahs RE Summer Sleep-Away Camp
Summer 2022 CAMP
To our Fahs Family,
The advisory board of Sophia Fahs UU RE Camp regrets to announce that camp will not be held in 2022. We have reached this unfortunate determination based upon four key factors:
It is clear to us that if Sophia Fahs Camp were to restart in the future, a new structure is needed, one that addresses the recent challenges both in our demographics and our world, and infuses us with fresh volunteers and fresh ideas.
Based on our recent survey of campers, staff, and families, we have identified a group of individuals who have graciously offered to share their time and talents with us. We are thrilled to bring new viewpoints and ideas to camp.
In the coming months, we will be re-imagining Fahs, with the goal of forming a robust program that will carry us forward into the future. Rather than rely so heavily on a 4-5 person advisory board, we are envisioning a team approach to managing camp, where volunteers can each share their strengths in their areas of interest and specialty. We hope to build a big tent. This process will be led by Matthew Barish, Allyson Barish, and David Schulman, with the continued assistance and guidance from Patsy Kaplan, David Sussman, and Peggy Schlechter.
We celebrate 35 years of wonderful programming, the generous participation of many, many volunteers and the lifelong friendships, experiences, and memories fostered here. Fahs has been a refuge for youth. It brought us together in a unique place and connected us with high standards through covenant.
We want to thank all the families who have shared their children and youth with us. Thank you most sincerely to the many UU individuals who have volunteered their time and talents to create a series of memorable Fahs seasons spanning three and one half decades. And, thank you to Sophia Fahs camp founder Reverend Randy Becker, and to Patsy Kaplan, whose vision, spirit and energy brought Fahs to life and served area youth for decades.
We invite and encourage anyone interested in being part of the next chapter of Sophia Fahs camp to join us in our journey. Please reach out to sophiafahs@gmail.com.
Sincerely,
Sophia Fahs Camp Advisory Board

The advisory board of Sophia Fahs UU RE Camp regrets to announce that camp will not be held in 2022. We have reached this unfortunate determination based upon four key factors:
- The diminishing UU youth demographic on Long Island
- Insufficient volunteer resources available to deliver a safe and uplifting camp experience
- Ongoing health and safety concerns
- Camp costs vastly out of proportion to the number of interested campers.
